No trip to Vietnam is complete without a water puppets show, it's an experience not to be missed. There is also a small exhibition of water puppets in the building nearby. One of 16 Vietnamese folk water puppetry troupes performs there every Saturday and Sunday, four times a day. The pavilion was built in a traditional style similar to that of the Thay Pagoda pavilion dating several hundred years back. Later on the same trip, I was in the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and learned that in November 2015 a new open air pavilion for water puppet performances had been opened there. Water puppetry in the Museum of Ethnology The show was about one hour long and left a distinctive and lasting impression. The performance was concluded by dances of four animals sacred in Vietnam: a dragon, a unicorn, a tortoise, and a phoenix. It’s Hoan Kiem Lake in the centre of Hanoi, with the Turtle Tower on the island. Hence the name of the lake – “The Returned Sword”. After the victory, the Golden Tortoise God appeared to claim the sword back when Le Roi was boating on a lake in Hanoi. ![]() As legend has it, he was granted a sword by deities to win the war. There was also the traditional sketch of Le Loi returning the sword, Le Loi being a national hero and the leader of the resistance against foreign invasion in the 15th century. There were fourteen sketches, all in all, portraying agricultural work, catching frogs, chasing a duck-hunting fox, and fishing, among others. The show started with a folk music composition played by a Vietnamese orchestra on traditional music instruments: drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes, and cymbals. The audience comprised mostly adult foreign tourists, but some children too. ![]() The ticket cost 100 000 dongs, about 5 USD. I still happily bought it as it was my only chance to watch such a performance on that trip. When it was my turn in the short line at the ticket office, I was told they only had a few tickets left for the last performance of the day, at 8 p.m. I went to buy a ticket first thing in the morning on the day of the show. I had an opportunity to watch a show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi. The world-famous Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre Water puppetry is a popular form of entertainment nowadays too, especially for local children and foreigners discovering Vietnamese folk culture. A water puppet show typically depicts Vietnamese day-to-day rural life along with important historical events and ancient legends. ![]() While puppets move around, directed by puppeteers standing waist-deep in the water behind the stage, singers tell their stories in songs. It also conceals puppet strings and puppeteer movements, improves musical and vocal acoustics, and provides a shimmering lighting effect.Įach water puppet is hand-carved and given five layers of lacquer paint to make it waterproof and add vibrant colours to the performance. Water is both the stage and a symbolic link to the rice harvest at water puppetry shows. Villagers in the delta of the Red River and in other rice-growing regions of Northern Vietnam staged water puppet performances at religious and end-of-harvest festivals, and on other important occasions. Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique folk art practiced since the 11th century.

![]() I also like setting up several stereo channels-stereo front, stereo middle, and stereo back of the room-so that I can still use all the work I have done on stereo parts, and I can split the space into three separate stereo sections, which has a nice effect. This allows for very localized sources, as opposed to the XY panner and sends route which blends across speakers as it moves. I also assign many channels to go out to just one of the surround sound speakers, as you can see in the screenshot of part of a surround live set I built for Presences Electroniques Festival In Geneva. I assign this to Lemur controls so that I can throw things around live, but what I find more useful is to assign LFO’s to the X and Y coordinates which can generate some really nice cyclic movement patterns. The more speakers you use the better the positional flexibility, although Ableton only currently has a maximum of 12 return channels, so that’s the speaker number limit using this technique. The plugin activates the sends accordingly to output the correct balance across all of the speakers in the room to give the best possible illusion of the sound coming from that position. You input the position of each speaker in the space, and which return channel it corresponds to, and then the position or movement you want for any given sound (something I usually control live or with LFOs). Then there’s an “XY Send Nodes Circlepan” Max for Live plugin available for free on the Max user database which can drive Ableton’s sends in order to move sounds around a space. Running this from Ableton relies on using the return channels for outputs, which currently gives a maximum of 12 possible channels. The most basic of these is my home-made surround sound show which is designed for clubs with six or eight speaker stacks relatively evenly spaced around the room. I love the effect of being wrapped up in sound, so I’ve experimented with several different types of immersive audio shows. And I use a Novation Launch Control XL for laser-specific controls, like adjusting the color balance, size, and brightness of the 3D image.ĬLICK ON A PHOTO TO ENTER GALLERY BROWSING I also use an iPad running Lemur, for live drumming and sending fast editing/glitching effects to the laser control. This allows us to set up many different forms in the 3D space, which can be triggered and manipulated from the Ableton set as I trigger clips and manipulate the audio using an Akai APC40. I run my live set with Ableton, as usual, and have MIDI clips set up on scenes in Live to send control messages to a separate laptop running Pangolin Beyond, which controls the laser. I’m always trying to find ways of bringing visual experiences to my shows, but I wanted to escape the standard screen format, so I started working with some architects-Satyajit Das and Regan Appleton-on a new technique for creating a three-dimensional field of points of light, using a laser and a special form of three-dimensional screen they invented. Max Cooper will be performing alongside Beatrice Dillon, Lotic, Zip, Daphni, Helm, Aurora Halal, Harvey Sutherland, Robert Henke, Africaine 808, Marie Davidson, and more at this year’s MUTEK Montreal. Thus, instead of detailing the minimal setup behind Cooper’s work, this month’s Live Essentials explores the technicalities and processes behind each of his different live performances. Having launched Emergence-a highly ambitious and visually-focused project that tells the story of how “everything comes from (almost) nothing”-around four years ago, he’s since developed four other live sets, which he performs at different venues around the world depending on the venue and the occasion-all while maintaining a setup that requires no extra luggage at the airport. In truth, even if you’ve seen Max perform more than once, there’s a high chance that they were rather different experiences. Though one of the most acclaimed live acts out there, it’s not easy to do a Live Essentials with Max Cooper, the Belfast-born, London-based DJ, producer, and scientist explains. “I focus on the experience of the people attending rather than the kit I use,” he explains, adding that he limits his setup as much as possible to allow him to fit it into his hand luggage. “It smoothes my travels and avoids lost or damaged equipment so that my shows are reliably delivered.” Detailing the gear behind his work would, therefore, be a very short read, so we had to adapt the format somewhat. Once the timer goes off, take a 5 minute break and then set another timer. To get started, just set a 25-minute timer and start working. The pomodoro method uses a timer to break work down into intervals of 25 minutes. The word “pomodoro” is actually the Italian word for tomato, which is appropriate once you know that ( according to Wikipedia) the pomodoro method (or pomodoro technique) was invented by Francesco Cirillo (an Italian) in the 1980s. What is a pomodoro, and why does it need a method? It is the best pomodoro app because of its perfect blend of powerful timeboxing tools and a clean, beautiful user interface to help support you when getting your work done. (I sometimes track my words written per hour in a spreadsheet, so the little differences matter there. There are a lot of great options available for a digital implementation of the pomodoro method, but we believe that none of them offer the simple interface and useful features that Be Focused Pro does. The only options are to let it run to 20 or "skip" entirely, so I can't get an accurate accounting of my time later. Also, if I work for 18 out of 20 minutes and have to stop, it won't record that interval correctly. It would be nice to have a default schedule in settings, but be able to modify the length of the current interval on the fly. If I sit down with 18 minutes to work, or 35, I can't edit the interval for a one-time session without going into settings and modifying the entire schedule, which I then have to change again next time. I have an ideal schedule set up in the app - e.g., 8 intervals of 20 minutes each - but more than half the time that's not how my day looks. Sometimes I'm setting out to work on something (writing specifically) based on the amount of time I have available, rather than an ideal schedule of X intervals of X minutes each. I'm a busy mom with several types of work on my plate every day. I do wish I could edit intervals on the fly, though. I like the way this app works (Mac OS), and how it tucks away neatly while you're working. There are lots of apps that try to of these kind of things, but Be Focused Focus Matrix seems to be the most efficient and well-put-together execution IMO. The Be Focused app helps you actually sit down and get the work done because you know that if you sit down and catch flow, you can off-load the responsibility of deciding when or not to futz around on facebook onto the Be Focused app. It really helps to have the focus matrix there to help you remember which tasks are worth spending your time on, and which ones are worth letting go. You just have to sit down and do things, and what you work on is your choice. It's important to dedicate time to sitting down and working without distractions as there is rarely anyone looking over your shoulder or any work card to punch in or out of. Also, as a grad student you have very unstructured time. I use this with Focus Matrix, a companion app that organizes you to-do list into one of four cateogories: important and urgent, important and not urgent, not important and urgent, and not important and not urgent.Īs a grad student responsible for more work than could possibly be asked of a human, some of which is busy-work and some of which actually forwards one's progress toward exiting the program, it is helpful to organize one's workflow this way. Create tasks, configure breaks and track your progress throughout the day, week or custom period. It’s a surprisingly effective way to retain motivation and focus.
